Being part of the exclusive A380-Group at my homebase Munich, it took just about two full years until I finally received my training in December 2018 on our beautiful A350 Thunderbird. The first plane, call sign D-AIXA, was delivered in December 2016 and began full operation on our Delhi route in February 2017. Until today, 12 A350´s are already in service with two more (D-AIXM and D-AIXN) joining the fleet end of March, respectively June 2019. The, for the time being, last jetliner (D-AIXO) is expected for November 2019. Completing the original order of 15 XWB-aircrafts.
Taking a full-day excursion to one of the many lakes surrounding Munich is a relaxing and fun thing to do during the Summer months, especially if you can sit back on one of the many steamboats while enjoying the marvelous views from the lake (check out this post about a tour of Lake Starnberg). And it is even more fun if you can experience it on an old-style paddle wheeler. Continue reading
One mandatory tradition that everyone has to go through when visiting Bavaria is the custom Weisswurst breakfast. A long-time Bavarian habit that is still kept indispensable in modern times and which is part of the typical laid-back Bavarian culture. And where could this be more exciting and relaxing than in a cable car gondola on the way up the mountain? Continue reading
Munich is a fab place to visit and to discover and I feel absolutely blessed to live in Germany´s most beautiful city. Wherever you are coming for a weekend trip or longer, there is so much culture and lifestyle awaiting to be explored, that two days are far too less if you are aiming to see it all. Like many more recommendations listed in my Munich section, today, I would like to introduce you to one of my personal favorites: Südfriedhof. Continue reading
Having still been infected by the train virus from our recent overnight rail ride to Budapest, it was pure luck that my partner stumbled over this extraordinary one hour excursion just this Easter Monday here in Munich. The Bavarian Localbahn Society, which I honestly had never heard of before, offered a round-trip around the city on tracks which are normally used for cargo transportation. But the speciality: Aboard an ancient train which dates back to 1913. No question that we were in for this short-term adventure. Continue reading
Having started out on the “Queen of the Skies” back in 1998, 2018 would become my next chapter in superjumbo air travel. Twenty years after my first on-duty flight on a Boeing B747-200 (which retired in 2001), I received the chance of my lifetime to join the Airbus A380 group after the company had announced the relocation of five of the 14 mega planes to my home base Munich from March 2018 on. Of course, I didn´t need much time to think this over…
Having paused my ecclesiastical interiors series “Church chic” for quite some time, I thought it was just the right moment to pick up with one of Munich´s most prominent and dignified place of worship: Church of Peter, or “Old Peter” as we call it. Continue reading
With the collapse of Air Berlin, Lufthansa´s traditional daily winter service from its Southern hub Munich has been rerouted three times a week via Duesseldorf, allowing formerly passengers of the leisure airline to fly nonstop from the capital of North Rhine Westphalia to the Sunshine State. The new/old connection (LH served MIA from DUS a few years ago already) operates Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays only while the remaining weekdays are operated from Munich. So it was bad luck that we were rebooked automatically via Duesseldorf on the day of our departure. Proved that a provincial airport does not meet the criteria of a sophisticated network carrier.
Like mentioned in a blog post from early 2016, Lufthansa had introduced services from Southampton to its hub Munich in March 2016 operated by its codeshare partner BMI Regional. Having just recently completed a channel crossing from Hamburg with the mighty Queen Mary 2, it was just the perfect occasion to try this air link by myself, turning out to be a comfortable and time-saving alternative to the permanently overcrowded London Heathrow airport.
