Cruises and excellent dining belong together for us like the sun and the sea. And since it is a huge passion of us to try out the various dining options that each and every line and ship have on offer, this time, we paid visit to Cunard Line´s “The Verandah” aboard the beautiful and elegant Queen Victoria. And boy were we reassured… Continue reading
Being my secret favorite of the three Queens, it was a long-awaited short trip to Southampton for private pleasure as well as a chance to check out the newest refurbishment that had just taken place in 2017. Continue reading
With an overall length of 270 meters, MV Aurora is the sixth largest cruise vessel within the British P&O Cruises fleet. She entered service in 2000 and was the first ship to receive the updated company livery with the waving Union flag design on her bow in 2014 while receiving a major refurbishment. I recently had the opportunity to visit the ship in Hamburg and fell in love right from the moment I laid foot on her teak decks. Continue reading
First of all, I would like to apologize that it has been quite quiet here on HideousJourneys lately. But believe it or not, a traveler like me needs some vacation time as well. Back home, I am ready to share some of my latest travel adventures with you. And they all have to do with cruising again, finally. But before we are setting sail for the Caribbean, let me give you insight in one of my favorite mini cruises there is: The crossing from Hamburg to Southampton (or vice versa) on a Cunard Queen. Food is one of the unquestionable temptations during a cruise and definitely one of the biggest success factors in the cruise industry. To me, it contributes massively to my well-being aboard and it is one of these things in life where a person´s passion and talent for his job as chef are unarguably measurable. One of our top priorities when choosing for a cruise line is the gastronomical level onboard. Celebrity Cruises has always been on our preferred list for big ship cruising since we first sailed with the line in 2011. And even though we have seen some major cutbacks in this field over the last five years (no more sunday brunch, smaller portions in the main dining room, no more midnight fruit buffets on deck, no more Baked Alaska parade, etc), the Modern Luxury approach to ingredients, composition and quality of the onboard catering still remains on a very high level. Travel is not only about going places, it is at least as much about tasting the local food that is offered there. It is a major ingredient to a quality experience and a to a unique and lasting memory. Cruise lines have been catering more and more to the needs of their sophisticated passengers over the last couple of years by introducing different speciality dining venues onboard their vessels, teaming up with celebrity star chefs or simply revolutionizing their menus in terms of freshness, uniqueness and local touches.
I love to eat when I travel! And it contributes so much to my travel experience when on the road, that if I didn´t work out as much as I do, I probably would have to add at least half of my girth to my present look. If that´s enough. Continue reading
