Looking to spend a weekend or a few days right in the Dusseldorf downtown area but trying to keep your budget a little together? Here is my hotel recommendation that lets you enjoy all the amenities of a comfortable and centrally located accommodation with an extraordinary price-performance.
The plan was originally to pamper myself with a deluxe stay at either the newly established Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf at Medienhafen or the DERAG Living De Medici Hotel right inside the lively Altstadt.
But as I had another city trip just shortly after this one, I decided to cut down on the hotel budget since I was not going to spend too much time inside my room anyways. So why bother spending a fortune if it is only for the night.
But finding a proper accommodation in Dusseldorf that offers a convenient and central location while still being a considerable choice in terms of style and comfort can be quite challenging in Dusseldorf, particularly if there is a major trade fair going on.
But I was lucky. Just a few days before my departure, I found a most excellent deal on Booking.com for the Wyndham Garden Königsallee. I grabbed the single room without breakfast for only 56,50€ per night, making it an altogether 113€ stay. Having stayed at Wyndham hotels already in the U.S., not an unfamiliar brand at all.
The hotel is situated very close in walking distance to a lot of points of interest and has very close access to both tram (Berliner Allee) and metro (Graf-Adolf-Platz). That makes it easily reachable by public transportation from the airport or the main train station.
It also has a great size with only 82 guest rooms in three different categories. Check-in time is 3:00pm, but it is no problem to store your luggage if you should be arriving early. I did so, fetched a map from the friendly hotel staff and started with my city exploration program right away.
WiFi is already included in the room rate. Should you be planning to use it on more than one device, tell the front desk, they will provide you with a voucher for each device as multiple log-ins on one voucher are not possible.
Each room holds a mini bar with four free soft drinks per stay. In very close reach you will find an ALDI supermarket if you would like to stock up your personal choice of drinks or food that needs to be refrigerated.
My single room 118 was located on the first floor and had a wheelchair accessible bathroom. The color scheme was red and the modern design created a cheerful and hip ambiance.
There were a coffee and tea maker, a safe and a flat screen television available as well as good night wine gum on the pillow.
The room also had a connecting door, something which I normally dislike big time. But as I paid such a low price, I decided not to ask for a different one. It would have not been any issue though, as I learned the day of check-out from the very helpful and friendly agent.
In the end, that would have been the smarter thing to do as I could hear my room neighbors very clearly. Thank goodness I had my ear plugs along with me this time!
The only thing that annoyed me a little during the two nights stay was the bed and the bedding. I should have read the hotel descriptions more intensely as the hotel apparently offers allergy friendly rooms. I must have had an issue with the pillow and the duvet, each morning I woke up to a major headache (and no, it was not because I have been to Altstadt too long). But knowing this now, I will definitely consider this property to stay at again and can truly recommend it if you would like to stay comfortably yet cost-concious!
