There is two things that I absolutely hate about L.A.:
- Traffic (and those seemingly millions of exploded tire pieces lying on the highways, just waiting to be catapulted onto your windshield or scratching off the polish of your car).
But as much as I dislike spending hours and hours in traffic stagnation, as much I appreciate the variety of extremely good restaurants spread all over the city.
So whenever I get to fly to Los Angeles, and that ain´t that often (those nine hours time difference just kill me every single time…), I take the burden of transport terror to pay visit to one of my absolute favourite breakfast locations: JON & VINNY´S in Fairfax, next to WEHO.
The sleek, Scandinavian style interior creates a fashionable, open and interactive atmosphere to enjoy the modern Italian evening cuisine or the outrageously good breakfast menu. The restaurant had encountered a fire just weeks ago, but was just recently re-opened with the enhanced interior design. JON & VINNY´S might not be the adequate choice when you are looking for a quiet enclave to propose to your fiance, but it is absolutely right if you´re craving for a delicious meal in a chill, comfortable yet hip environment.
The staff is sexy and extremely friendly. The compact menu holds something for every taste. The quality is excellent.
I have not yet been for dinner, but the Café Latte is one of the best tasting ones I´ve had in the U.S. so far.
So is “Dave´s Banana Bread with salted, whipped butter“. It´s rich. It´s moist, It´s decadent and it´s absolutely worth breaking any low-carb diet that you might be torturing yourself with! And don´t be afraid: The dish is well portioned and not too sweet. And since the butter is whipped, it looks more in the cup than it actually is.
I also cannot do without the “Caramelized Schaner Farm Ruby red grapefruit“. Everyone needs a little fruit to start the day with. This grapefruit receives a thin, roasted sugar crust on top that you normally know from creme brûlée. Underneath, it splashes your palate with succulent fruit. Yummy!
And while some of you might shiver with revulsion when I begin speaking of porridge for breakfast, to me, this is always my favourite part of a healthy, energy-filled start into the day. The “Kenter Canyon Stone ground porridge” comes with toasted almonds, Gaviota strawberries and Orange blossom honey. If you like, you may choose from organic whole or almond milk to perfect this bowl of power.
Oh yeah, and how could I forget about the passionfruit infused freshly squeezed orange juice??? Tsts, silly me…
But the thing that really makes JON & VINNY´S stand out in the crowd is its very refreshing L.A.-unusual down-to-earth (without compromising on quality) attitude.
Vinny Dotolo and Jon Chuck created a gem for sensible nourishment without any fuss. The meals are served as printed in the menu (“changes & modifications are politely declined” it says) and are made of mostly local AND organic ingredients. And that mirrors in the crowd.
NO Wannabe-Vegans, NO no-carb lifestyle freaks and NO special favour individualists. Just people who would like to enjoy a delicious and wholesome meal.
Healthy. Frank. Straight. Basic.

Oh, I almost forgot. As the place holds 45 people the most, reservations are highly recommended! Especially, if you are planning to go as a group. When you would like to have breakfast without a reservation, don´t come later than 8:30am the latest. JON & VINNY´S has more fans than just me. It fills up VERY fast after 8:30am!
